5 Tips to Make Relocating Easier!
Relocating can be a challenging and stressful process, but with the right amount of planning and organization, you can make it smoother and more manageable. Here are five general tips to help you with your relocation:
Plan and Prepare in Advance: Start planning your relocation well in advance to give yourself enough time to tackle all the necessary tasks. Create a timeline and a to-do list to help you stay organized. This includes researching your new location, finding a place to live, arranging for utilities and services, and notifying relevant parties about your move. If you have a home to sell, consult your local Realtor. If you don’t have one yet, shoot me a text at 904-309-3430. I have a huge network of agent acquaintances, and I would love to set you up with a referral in your local market. A typical closing is 45 days from contract, so if you’re looking to buy, sell, or do both…be sure you loop your agent in early in the process. A good Realtor (like me!) will make the entire process go smoothly! Additionally, a great agent will help you determine exactly which area of a city fits your needs and lifestyle best. If you’re moving to Jacksonville, FL or Northeast Florida in general, I would be happy to help you with this process. Jacksonville is HUGE, and there are so many areas to consider. Take a peek at my blog post about Moving to Northeast Florida for a good overview of just a few of the main neighborhoods in Jacksonville.
Declutter and Organize: Before packing up your belongings, take the opportunity to declutter and get rid of items you no longer need or want. Sort through your belongings and consider donating, selling, or discarding things that no longer serve a purpose in your new home. It’s silly to pack and move items you won’t need! Organize your remaining possessions and label boxes for easy unpacking later. I like detailed labels on boxes, so I’m not constantly digging through boxes looking for specific items.
Hire Professional Movers or Plan DIY: Decide whether you want to hire professional movers or handle the move yourself. If you choose to hire professionals, research reputable moving companies, compare prices, and read reviews to ensure you select a reliable option. If you prefer a DIY move, gather the necessary packing supplies, enlist friends or family to help, and plan the logistics carefully. If you are moving to Jacksonville, FL, I have an excellent and highly reputable moving company I recommend. They have moved clients here from all over the country for me.
Change Address and Notify Relevant Parties: Inform relevant parties of your upcoming move and update your address. This includes notifying your employer, banks, utility companies, insurance providers, and any subscription services you use. Don't forget to redirect your mail to your new address through the postal service. Common things people forget to update are recurring shipments like Chewy, meal plan services, medications, or the most common–AMAZON! You don’t want the new residents of your current home getting all your awesome deliveries, so be sure to change them. I recommend going through your recurring payments in your bank or credit card account to be sure you don’t miss one.
Take Care of Yourself and Stay Positive: Relocating can be physically and emotionally exhausting, so it's essential to take care of yourself throughout the process. Make time for breaks, eat well, stay hydrated, and get enough rest. Stay positive and keep an open mind about your new location, embracing the opportunities that come with the change. If you’re moving to Jacksonville, FL, I highly recommend a nice long walk on the beach as soon as you get to town! Nothing is quite as relaxing as the ocean.
Remember, each relocation is unique, and there may be specific considerations depending on your circumstances. If you have health or lifestyle concerns that require special attention, planning ahead is a your best bet for a stress free move. If you need help with any of the above, don’t hesitate to reach out! I’ve moved over 20 times in my life, and I consider myself an expert mover at this point.
